Notice how the author uses color, font and illustrations to bring the reader into the enchanting story being told. Throughout the book, characters share the legends and tales that have been passed down from generation to generation. Ma sees no joy in their lives, only pain and suffering. Ma’s bitterness shows when she says “ Our house is bare and our rice hardly fills our bowls, but we have plenty of stories.” Ma sighed again. But, Ma is resentful of the stories and feels they make Minli impractical and cause her to daydream. These stories inspire Minli and give her hope for a life beyond the mud and intense labor of village life. Ba, a kind, caring man tells stories every night at dinner. She lives in a small hut with her parents Ba and Ma. In contrast to the brown is Minli, who has a lively and impulsive spirit. Nothing grew on Fruitless Mountain, thus its name. In the valley of the valley of Fruitless Mountain, a young girl named Minli lives in a village that was hard, poor and a shade of faded brown. She currently lives in Somerville, Massachusetts with her husband Alex. Grace has written and illustrated many other books for kids. Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a fantasy story inspired by the Chinese folktales she loved as a child. Over time, she began to embrace her roots and visited Hong Kong, Taiwan and China to deepen her knowledge of the stories she had read. Eventually she read these and began to add her own details to the stories. By the age of eleven, Lin fully disregarded her Asian heritage but her mother left Chinese folktale and fairy-tale books on the bookshelf as a way to try to engage Grace in her native culture. Her parents were immigrants from Taiwan and at home, her family followed customs from Taiwan, though they generally spoke English. Grace Lin loved to read and write books since she was a child.
